We are excited to announce the addition of Dr. William Farrelly and Dr. Jamie Roche to our esteemed team of Principal Investigators (PIs). Both Dr. Farrelly and Dr. Roche bring a wealth of expertise and innovative research experience, promising to enhance WiSAR’s research capacity and drive new advancements in industry focused research.
Dr. William Farrelly
Dr. William Farrelly is a lecturer in the department of computing at the Atlantic Technological University where he specialises in computer system security, cryptography, digital forensics and XR technologies. With a background in both industry and education, he combines practical and academic skillsets to offer students well-rounded and relevant education. His research interests include emerging digital trends, educational technologies, digital security and virtual reality and related topics. He is committed to fostering a forward-thinking learning environment at ATU. He has contributed to numerous industry projects and academic publications, bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Dr. Jamie Roche
Dr. Jamie Roche is a Lecturer in Robotics and Automation at ATU Sligo’s School of Engineering and Design and a visiting researcher at Loughborough University London. Previously, he was a research fellow at Loughborough, working on the EPSRC-funded MIMIc project with Chelsea Football Club and Toyota. Jamie holds a Ph.D. (Wolfson studentship) and an M.Sc. in digital technologies from Loughborough University London.
Earlier in his career, Jamie worked as a Consulting Forensic Engineer and expert witness in Irish courts with Denis Wood & Associates, where he also earned a diploma in Accident Investigation. He has additional experience as a project engineer with Irish Rail, a WASH Engineer with Help International, and a graduate engineer with Schering Plough Pharmaceuticals. Jamie holds an M.Sc. in Bioengineering from Trinity College Dublin, a B.Eng. in Mechatronics from Dublin City University, and a Dip.Eng. in Process Instrumentation and Control from IT Carlow.

The addition of Dr. Farrelly and Dr. Roche to the Principal Investigator team aligns with WiSAR’s mission to be at the forefront of industry focused research. Their combined knowledge and experience not only strengthen the lab’s capabilities but also open new avenues for interdisciplinary collaboration, both within the lab and with external industry partners.
