Dr Karla Muñoz Esquivel is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Computing at the Atlantic Technological University (ATU), Letterkenny campus. She has a B.Eng. (Hons.) in Electronic Systems from ITESM, Mexico City campus. She has an M.Sc. (Dist.) in Computing and Intelligent Systems and a Pg. Dip. Researchers from Ulster University (UU). The latter included speciality modules in Teaching at Higher Education and Project Management. She won the 8-over-8 prize for the best Master with a specialism in December 2008. Her PhD dissertation entitled PlayPhysics: An Emotional Student Model for Game-based Learning was one of the three runners-up to attain the British Computer Society (BCS) Distinguished Dissertation Award in 2013. She was granted the EU AlBan scholarship and the Vice-Chancellor Research Scholarship (VCRS) at UU to pursue postgraduate studies. She was a Certified Associate in Project Management by PMI from 2012 to 2017. She is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA). As a postgraduate researcher, she co-led the Interreg European Funded projects, SEDOC and IT4Anxiety, NPA and NWE respectively, from 2018 to 2021. She is keen to keep working on international European projects with socio-economic impacts. She has experience working internationally in both industry and academia with multidisciplinary international teams. Her research interests are User Modelling, Sensor technologies and their usability, Human-Computer Interaction, Affective Computing, E-learning, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. She is the author and co-author of international conference and journal papers and book chapters in peer-review publications.
