Brian Ashall

Brian is a lecturer in Physics & Instrumentation Science in ATU and is based in the Galway City campus.

His primary research background is in the field of plasmonics, which is a sub field of nano-photonics. Plasmonics studies the interaction between electromagnetic waves (or photons) and electron density oscillations in a conductor. Some of the primary applications of plasmonics are: biosensing, electromagnetic field enhancement, and photonic technologies. Brian has disseminated his research via peer-review publications, conference proceedings and conference presentations etc. Brian also acts as reviewer for a number of scientific journals.

Having experience in both photonics and semiconductor physics, Brian joined the WiSAR Lab as a PI at the time of the launch of the SPEAR Centre (Semiconductor Photonics Education and Research Centre). This project, supported by PEACEPLUS, is led by the ATU WiSAR lab in partnership with Ulster University, the Tyndall National Institute, and Seagate Technologies.

Prior to his current position, Brian has previous lecturing experience in the Dublin Institute of Technology (or Technological University Dublin as it is now) and the Institute of Technology Tralee (or Munster Technological University as it is now). Prior to that, he worked as a Research Fellow and Postdoctoral Researcher in University College Dublin (UCD), and he also received his PhD in Physics from UCD in 2009, and a BSc in Physics 2005.
