Adhavan Murugaiyan from India, earned his Bachelor of Technology degree in Information Technology from Pondicherry University, Pondichéry, India in 2024. He later completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Big Data Analytics from the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Bengaluru in 2025 and a Master of Technology degree in Data Science from CHRIST University, Bengaluru in 2026.
Currently, he is a Doctoral Researcher in Computing, Information and Communication Technologies at Wisar Lab, Atlantic Technological University (ATU), Letterkenny, Ireland, where he began his Doctoral Studies in 2026. He is a member of the Semiconductor and Photonics Education and Research (SPEAR) Centre at the ATU WiSAR Lab where his research focuses on Artificial Intelligence for 6G Communications. He conducts his doctoral research under the supervision of Dr. Shagufta Henna and Dr. Nick Timmons.
His doctoral research focuses on Photonic-Inspired Federated Learning for Communication-Efficient Next Generation Radio Access Networks (NG-RANs). His work investigates how photonic and neuromorphic computing principles can inspire new approaches to Federated Learning for future wireless networks. In particular, he explores event-driven and sparse model updates to reduce communication overhead, hierarchical Federated Learning across network layers and efficient edge intelligence for heterogeneous and resource-constrained 6G environments.
His research interests include Artificial Intelligence for 6G Communications, Federated Learning, Edge AI, Open RAN, Network Intelligence, Distributed Machine Learning, Photonic-Inspired Computing, Neuromorphic Computing and Intelligent Wireless Networks. His broader interests also include deep learning, representation learning, uncertainty quantification, trustworthy AI and scalable machine learning systems.
His research is conducted as part of the SPEAR Centre’s collaborative programme involving Atlantic Technological University, Ulster University, Tyndall National Institute and Seagate Technology, with the broader objective of advancing high-performance, communication-efficient and intelligent technologies for next-generation telecommunications.
