Now Hiring: Senior Photonics Engineer



The Semiconductor Photonics Education and Research (SPEAR) Centre is seeking applications for a Senior Photonics Engineer to join the team at the WiSAR Lab, Atlantic Technological University (ATU), Letterkenny.

Overview

Funded through the PEACEPLUS Programme, the €8.46 million SPEAR Centre is a collaborative initiative between Atlantic Technological University (ATU), Ulster University (UU) and Tyndall National Institute. The Centre is developing a photonics research, training and innovation response to the challenges outlined in the EU Chips Act 2023 while strengthening high-skill employment and research infrastructure across the border region.

The successful candidate will join the experienced WiSAR Lab team and lead research, design and implementation activities focused on integrating photonics technologies into new products and manufacturing processes. Working closely with SMEs, the successful applicant will help identify technology needs, develop innovative photonics-based solutions and deliver industry-focused research and innovation projects.

This position may be offered on a specific purpose contract for an indicative period of 36 months.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing a leadership role in the design and execution of research and industry projects
  • Engagement with industry to develop collaborative research projects.
  • Liaising with industry partners, translating requirements into practical and innovative solutions.
  • Managing project deliverables for internal and external stakeholders, including scheduling, resource planning and reporting.
  • Preparation of appropriate project documentation and design reviews to ensure accuracy and adherence to technical requirements.
  • Providing technical and schedule estimates for individual design responsibilities on assigned project.

Essential Requirements

  • PhD in Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering or a related field or exceptionally, equivalent* research experience (including industrial R&D).
  • 2.1 Honours degree [or higher] in Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in photonics related technology in an industrial or research environment.
  • Proven success [with specific examples] in delivering technical projects.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

*EU defines PhD equivalent 4 years fulltime research after primary degree

Contract: Specific Purpose Contract (indicative duration of 36 months)
Salary: Senior Research Fellow (€81,760 – €87,743)
