Radio Compliance

Any consumer product which includes a radio frequency device needs to conform to regulations set down by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and national bodies around the world.  Radio equipment is define as an electrical or electronic product, which intentionally emits and/or receives radio waves for the purpose of radio communication and/or radio determination, or an electrical or electronic product which must be completed with an accessory, such as antenna, so as to intentionally emit and/or receive radio waves for the purpose of radio communication and/or radio determination.  The EU has provided a useful guide to this complex issue known as the “Guide to the Radio Equipment Directive (RED)”.   If you are using equipment in an unlicensed frequency band, such as an ISM band then it is necessary to comply with RED.  It is not mandatory to carry out compliance testing, but it is mandatory to comply.  You can find a copy of the RED guide using the following link,
